Gentle Meltdown

Once again, I am not at all blue on this Blue Monday in the blog, but the sky is, as the beautiful warm weather continues. Rain, we hear, tomorrow.

Today we (NCHS) play Bloomington and Hinsdale at a volleyball mini-tourney, and we (the parents) work concessions, the last of the parental obligation in that little booth. (Nachos, hot dogs, candy, water, pop.)

I'm gently melting down after playing Martha Rice in the annual Evergreen Cemetery walk, remembering her saying, "Bloomington was a nice place to live except for that namecalling. Copperhead! Secesh hole....Well, I guess 'blackhearted abolitionists' was namecalling, too." And her moment of shared/public regret.

I think Martha took to heart President Lincoln's second inaugural address, asking the country to come together after the war. To heal, not to keep punishing each other.

Ah, yes, the melancholy president. On a Blue Monday. And now I've got Elizabeth and the Catapult in my head, singing "Rainiest Day of Summer," and the lyric, "I'm feeling melancholy, melancholy."

But I'm not.

Except sort of, the maroon mums still just about to bloom.

Hmm, maybe no rain after all! Tough loss, in 3, at v-ball....

Sorry about the loss, but are you done forever with concession booth service? Can you imagine your Martha working the concession booth ladling the nacho sauce?

Oh, there'll be others, right? The concessions sound like a good place to work. Nachos at volleyball games? I'm going to have to have a word with the PTA. ;)

Martha would be right at home at the concession booth window, taking orders! As to the nacho cheese, I think she would be horrified.

Jayne, there were also walking tacos and super nachos (chips drizzled with cheese and then the meat from the walking tacos). A walking taco, for those without kids in sporting events, is a snack bag of Fritos, opened, with seasoned ground beef, shredded lettuce, and shredded cheese spooned in.

Plus...bananas! Pick your own! (from a bowl, not a tree)

I want a walking taco! Fritos are one of my comfort foods...I would eat them after a gentle meltdown. You were marvelous as Martha, by the way.

Thanks, Kim. They got much praise at the event, pleasing the maker (not me). (I remained safely up front, away from the food handling. They've learned from experience. Oh, why, yes, those ARE several hot dogs on the ground. Hmmm, I wonder how they got there....)

Last I checked our sporting events featured guys dressed as hot dogs racing guys dressed as bratwurst, sometimes attacking each other with baseball bats. It's all terribly phallic.
